Lester N. Banh was born in 1979 in the port city of Can Tho, Vietnam, in Hua Giang Province, where his family was fabric merchants and his grandfather was the chief of police. Four years after the end of the Vietnam War, they left Vietnam for the United States in October 1979 as refugees and as part of the last wave of “boat people” to come to America. In 1997, after graduating from Redlands High School in Redlands, California, where he excelled both academically and athletically, Lester attended the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) on a full academic scholarship. He graduated from UCLA in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. While at UCLA Lester also worked for 2 1/2 years at the UCLA/VA CURE: Digestive Disease Research Center, primarily working on research studies concerning Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).In his final quarter at UCLA, Lester also began the Master’s Program at Emperor’ s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine (ECTOM) in Santa Monica, California. In 2005, at the age of 25, he received the degree of Masters of Traditional Oriental Medicine (M.T.O.M) cum laude. While at ECTOM he also received the Founder’s Grant, given to individual who had succeeded in overcoming substantial obstacles in their lives in their quest for academic excellence. At ECTOM he had an opportunity to be a student and intern of some of the acupuncture community’s most distinguished doctors including Dr. John Gu (from the famous Gu family lineage of Shanghai), Dr. Tiande Yang (former physician in charge of the Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at the Beijing Dongzhimen hospital), Dr. Jimin Mai (former chief physician in Xiyuan Hospital, China), and Dr. Joy Jin (former physician in the Cardiovascular Dept. at Heilongjiang University). In 2004, he also had an opportunity to participate in an externship at the UCLA Arthur Ashe Center, treating students at the student health center under Dr. Thom Nguyen. Lester passed the California Acupuncture Licensing Examination in January of 2005, becoming a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist in the State of California. In addition to his education at ECTOM, Lester also studied for 3 years under Dr. Tatsuo Hirano, L.Ac. D.O.M, a renowned acupuncturist, and creator of Modern Medical Chi-Kung (MMC) and Hirano Myo-Osteo Therapy (HMOT). He also hopes to complete the doctoral program for Traditional Oriental Medicine within the near future. Lester’s goal now, is to provide universal family healthcare through the practical application of Traditional Oriental Medicine including the use of acupuncture, herbs, Modern Medical Chi-Kung, Chinese Energetics, and Myo-Osteo Therapy. Although he has successfully treated patients in a variety of areas, he especially has a great interest in the usage of Chinese medicine in orthopedics, pain management, sports injuries and rehabilitation, digestive diseases, gynecology, and infertility. He looks forward to working in conjunction with those in the western medical community in providing a more complete and holistic medical service to those in the community. He currently maintains a busy practice at Redlands Acupuncture, a Traditional Oriental and Holistic Medicine clinic located in Redlands, California. Redlands is a small community in San Bernardino County, located one hour east of Los Angeles. He practices along side two very knowledgeable and experienced acupuncturist, Theresa Van Ornum, M.S., L.Ac and Xian Ai Meng, M.S., L.Ac., and Lori Becker, a licensed massage therapist.
